Inspiring Artists | Hannah Davies

Hannah Davies is an illustrator who works mainly with pattern. She lives and works by the sea side in Wales. Her work is intricately created and brimming with detail. Her hand drawn work comes together alongside her own textile patterns, coloured papers and water colours. I have chosen some of my favourite of her images to share with you below.

Hannah Davies’ owl is colourful and appealing. The change in depth of each colour used adds definition to each section. Even though her drawings are simplistic in some ways, they are bursting with life with the patterns that are repeated throughout.

The use of watercolour in Hannah’s images gives them delicate quality. The colours are energetic yet calming all at the same time – the perfect balance. I love how the line drawn sections of the image compliment the brightly coloured elephants.

This quaint tea time image showcases perfectly Hannah’s technique of patterned prints layered with hand drawn segments. The delicate use of watercolours also once again shines through. I love that she has her own quirky style when it comes to drawing. Along with making me want to make myself a pot of tea and eat a nice cupcake, this beautiful piece of art inspires me to dig out my drawing pens and start creating.

I love the composition and content of this image. It perfectly depicts the hustle and bustle of London. It is brimming with detail and energy. In every section of the art work, there is something going on. And even though it is bursting with life, the relaxing river Thames that runs flows throughout brings unity to the illustration.

Hannah Davies has created a variety of commissions for many design companies. Below are some examples.

This image is part of a collection that Hannah designed for Airlines Calendar. This one in particular portrays the stunningly vibrant Mumbai.

This illustration is about hair and health and was designed for the London Magazine’s beauty page. This just shows how good Hannah is at filling an entire page with pattern, and exactly how well it works!

The fox was done for ‘art therapy colouring book’ (colouring for grown-ups). This, according to Hannah’s website, will be out yearly. It is to be published by Buster books. It is out now and is definitely a great way to get creative.

These quirky lights were commissioned by joiner and furniture maker Eifion Porter. The task was to create repeat pattern designs for light boxes. I think they are very innovative and I would love to have one in my own home.

I hope you’ve enjoyed exploring the work of Hannah Davies with me. There are plenty more of her illustrations to admire on her website and through clicking on any of the links below.
