Cocktail Hour | Favourite Autumn Cocktails

To start with, may I just say that I would happily place every whiskey based cocktail within this post and have done with it. Whiskey, for me, is the perfect spirit for these cold nights. An alternative would be spiced rum. The possible combinations just scream Autumn and you know how much I love Autumn!

Mulled wine is always a Christmas favourite, but how about mulled cider for Autumn?

3½pts/2L Dry Cider or Fresh Apple Juice
2 Apples studded with cloves
4-6 Cinnamon sticks
5-6 Allspice berries
Zest of 1 orange
Dark rum (optional)
Slices of apple for garnish

Combine all ingredients in a large saucepan and simmer gently for 30 minutes - do not boil.

Or maybe you'd prefer a sweeter Satan's Whiskers!

1 oz Gin
½ oz Grand Marnier
1 oz Dry Vermouth
1 oz Sweet Vermouth
1 oz Orange juice
2 dashes Orange Bitters
Pour the ingredients into a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake well. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.

Forget being sweet, it's the month of Halloween! It's time for a Sinister Cider.

1 Lady Apple, chopped
½ Lime, cut into wedges
1 ounce Maple Syrup
1 ounce Apple Cider
2 ounces Vodka

1 thin crosswire slice of apple, for garnish
In a cocktail shaker, muddle together apple cubes and lime wedges. Add syrup, cider, and vodka. Fill with ice. Cover and shake until well combined. Strain into prepared martini glass and top with club soda. Garnish with apple slice and serve.

Time for a good oldie! Sangria is perfect for these autumn nights.

1 cup Brandy
1 Orange (ends cut off), thinly sliced
1 Red Apple, halved and thinly sliced
2 bottles well-chilled Dry Red Wine
1 cup Soda Water
3/4 cup fresh Orange juice

In a large pitcher, stir together brandy, orange and apple slices. Let stand 15 minutes. Add wine, soda water, and orange juice. Serve over ice.

What's an autumn without a little cinnamon to spice things up?

1½ oz KahlĂșa Cinnamon Spice
3 oz Sparkling Apple Cider
Small squeeze of lemon

Shake KahlĂșa Cinnamon Spice and lemon. Top with sparkling cider. Garnish with dash of nutmeg or cinnamon.

Things are about to get spooky with a Ghost In The Graveyard!

2 ounces Black Vodka
2 ounces Creme de Cacao or Coffee-flavored liqueur
1 scoop Vanilla ice cream
Pinch of finely grated nutmeg, for garnish

In a glass, combine vodka and creme de cacao, and set aside. Place a scoop of ice cream in a highball glass, and slowly pour vodka mixture over ice cream. Garnish with nutmeg; serve immediately.

If you're not a fan of cider or fruity flavours of any kind, maybe a creamy Pumpkin Pie will do the trick?

Ma Bicyclette: Cocktail Hour | Favourite Autumn Cocktails - Pumpkin Pie

2½ parts Canadian Club Classic 12
1 part DeKuyper Buttershots
4 parts Half & Half (Half light cream and half milk)
2 parts Pumpkin Pie Puree

Shake all ingredients with ice. Strain into a chilled martini glass that has been rimmed with graham cracker crust. Garnish with a dash of Pumpkin Spice.

Another magical night in autumn is Bonfire Night -  hot chocolate, sparklers and Spiced Caramel Apples!

2 oz Ginger liqueur
1 oz Caramel Vodka
2½ oz Apple cider
1 dash lemon juice

Rim martini glass with agave syrup and crumbled gingersnap cookies. Add liquid ingredients to a cocktail shaker with ice and shake well. Strain into martini glass.

Halloween is the best time for working on your cocktail skills as the weirder looking the better! You can also get away with imperfect flavour combinations too, so give it a try. Practice makes perfect.
