Age Is A State Of Mind | Fashion and Style Inspiration

Do you have a mum who constantly questions what she can and cannot wear? It isn't a "does this look right with this?" type questioning. It's "can I wear this at my age?". This is something I just don't understand, at what point do you start doubting your dress sense? Does age change it? I honestly don't believe I could ever reach a point where my age will play a part in how I shop and what I buy. It would certainly put a lot of barriers in place because if you're questioning items of clothing in terms of suitability for your age it's going to be endless.

People should dress with personality, with an understanding of themselves. Not in fear of the stereotypical collective expectations from society about age. What is the expectation? Generations are changing every day, I can assure you that 20 year olds of today will not look like their grandparents when they are 80. Fashion, life and culture is changing all the time and that's why when it comes to personal style that's what it should be - personal!

Here are some examples of personal style worn with pride - no matter the age!

Kirstie Allsopp - she is someone who has chosen a specific style and stuck to it. Not in a negative way, but in fact a way in which she knows what suits her and she's making the most of it.

Robin Wright - seriously cool and so effortless. What I see when I look at Robin Wright is a laid back personality, moving with the waves of life, taking everything as it comes. Living in the moment.

Patricia Clarkson - refreshing, playful and to me, age doesn't seem to be an issue with her!

Michelle Pfeiffer - she knows what suits her again. Feminine necklines and soft fabrics show off her figure and complexion. Plus I really want that patterned blouse - love it!

Helen Mirren - I couldn't do this without Helen Mirren surely! She is beautiful and has a great sense of style! She also remembers that she still has a womanly shape and makes the most of it! Her style is classic, not because her age makes her dress this way, but because she always has dressed this way! Classic and sexy.

Stevie Nicks - I had to mention her because she is one of my own style icons. Don't lose your own sense of style or eccentricity. Be yourself and wear what you like!

Society judges everyone, especially when it comes to fashion. You can be wearing the most fashionable piece of clothing of the season and it won't translate to people on the street that care more about streetstyle. Subcultures are divided visually by their contrasting ideals in fashion. Think goths, punks, mods, hippies. In a specific subculture you'll look relatively similar and won't normally step outside of this. I believe that, for some, this is what age is becoming in terms of fashion. When you reach your 40s you look around to see what other 40 year olds are wearing, the same when you're 50 and 60. If you look a little different you must be doing it all wrong, right? Wrong. You should never lose your own identity, no matter what your age.

I want you to pause for a moment and think about when you were younger. What did you love about the way you dressed? Was it the colours you wore? The style? Maybe it was your hair that rounded up the whole look. Close in on these specifics.

1. Don't be afraid to experiment.

2. Find what shapes suit you and make it your staple!

3. Find what colours suit your skin tone and work around those colours.

4. Make a list of must-have items. My leather jacket is on mine, it completes almost any outfit.

5. If you're not sure what you like, find someone who dresses in a way that inspires you, whether it be a musician, actress, or politician! Whoever it is, don't feel restricted by age!

Be Yourself!
